What You Should Know About Coronavirus

The news is filled with reports about the spread of coronavirus (2019-nCoV or COVID). The illness first appeared in China only a few short months ago. It has slowly spread to other nations around the world and has finally presented recently in the United States. It is important to understand that even if you test positive for the virus it does not mean that you will become seriously ill. There are many mild cases of Coronavirus across the globe.

Whether you have the potential for a mild or serious case of COVID, the medical professionals at Medcare want to put you at ease by providing tips that will help to keep you and your family healthy.

How to Keep from Contracting 2019-nCov

While there are no sure-fire methods that will keep you completely safe from contracting the Coronavirus the following are steps to take that will give you a better chance of avoiding it.

  • Wash your hands often. Use clean water and soap. Wash the top and bottom of your hands for at least 20 seconds.
  • Wash your hands after you go to the bathroom, before you eat, after you cough or sneeze. Wash your hands after you blow your nose.
  • Cover your mouth and nose completely when you cough or sneeze. Cough into your elbow or into a cloth that completely covers your mouth. Dispose of any tissues immediately after you have sneezed, coughed or blown your nose.
  • Find a new way to greet someone. Germs are spread very easily from hand to hand contact. Perhaps, a nod hello or touching elbow to elbow might work for the near future.
  • Keep several containers of hand sanitizer strategically located in your home, vehicle and workplace. These antimicrobial soaps are effective in killing germs.
  • Take care of yourself and your family. Get plenty of sleep, eat natural fruits and vegetables and avoid large crowds for the time being.
  • Use disinfectant wipes to keep counters, doorknobs, cell phones and computers or keyboards, and other commonly touched areas clean. Germs themselves may lose their potency after 24 hours but still remain on surfaces or in the air longer than this.

What to Do if You or a Family Member Becomes Ill

You or a loved one may actually become ill sometime over the winter or spring months. However, it may only be a simple cold or mild flu.

So, the question is how do you know what to do? One way to decide if you should just stay home and miss a day of school or work, or if you are seriously ill is to take your temperature. If you have a fever it is best to seek medical care at your nearby walk-in clinic because fevers are indicative of a more serious illness. Read More from CDC!
